Concept Definition Maps (Why we should use it?)
Concept of Definition (CD) Map
In this strategy, as explained by Miller and Veatch in Literacy in Context (2011), words are used along with visual images. A Concept of Definition Map is a type of semantic mapping in which you use geometric shapes to show how the main concept is related to its sub-concepts. There are three components to it: 1. Category (What is it?), 2. Properties (What is it like?) and 3. Illustrations (What are some examples?) (page 15). According to Inspiration.com concept definition maps allow students to:: 1. Brainstorm and generate new ideas 2. Discover new concepts and the propositions that connect them 3. More clearly communicate ideas, thoughts and information 4. Integrate new concepts with older concepts 5. Gain enhanced knowledge of any topic and evaluate the information The Frayer Model (see below), designed by Dorothy Frayer, is another type of Concept Definition map. the Frayer model is "designed to have students analyze a concept, synthesize the concept and apply the information" (Taufik Hidayah, 2012) through the visualization and benefits of the graphic organizer.
