Vocabulary Rating Guide (Why should we use it?)
In this strategy, students rank their knowledge for each new vocabulary word before, during, and after reading the text. During this process, students evaluate their awareness of each vocabulary word. In the book, Literacy in Context (2011) Miller and Veatch state "Studies document the effectiveness of teaching students to monitor their own vocabulary growth. Word consciousness is one of the characteristics of students with strong vocabularies" (page 23)..
“Dale and O'Rourke (1986) proposed a model of four levels of word knowledge. This model should be shared with students so they can be more metacognitive and metalinguistic when learning new words" (keystoliteracy.com)
